Daniel Recap – 4 Characteristics of Faithful Exiles
INTRO
We’ve finished Daniel 1–6 (narratives); shift coming in ch. 7
Goal: reflect on key theme → faithfulness in exile
A refresher on exile for Daniel:
Israel removed from land due to disobedience
Placed in foreign, God-opposed culture
A refresher on exile for us:
NT calls believers “exiles”
We live in a world not aligned with God
How do we live faithfully here?
4 CHARACTERISTICS OF FAITHFUL EXILES
1. Faithful exiles…know God well & pursue him consistently
Daniel:
1:8 - As a teen, Daniel knows God’s law → refuses defilement
6:10 - In old age, Daniel still prays daily
The Pattern: Daily consistency + lifelong faithfulness
The Result: Deep knowledge of God (e.g., 2:20-22)
Question: What’s one way you will make your pursuit of the Lord more consistent?
2. Faithful exiles…serve where God has them
Daniel & Friends:
Pagan government officials (e.g., see 2:48-49)
Worked with excellence + integrity (e.g., see 6:3-4)
Key Idea: A significant part of living a faithful life in this world is doing our work for the Lord, no matter what role God has placed us in
Faithfulness Looks Like:
Excellence (skill, diligence)
Ethics (integrity, love)
Applies To: Any role (job, home, etc.)
Question: What’s one way you will serve the Lord by improving either your excellence or your ethics at work?
3. Faithful exiles…maintain unwavering devotion to God
a) Even under threat
Example:
Fiery furnace (3:17-18, 28): “But if not…”
Devotion > comfort, reputation, money, even life
The Reality: Faithfulness will cost something
Question: What in your life regularly lures your devotion away from God that you need to give up for his sake?
b) Respectfully, not contentiously
Daniel’s posture:
Examples: 1:8ff; 6:10
No protests, no showmanship; just quiet, routine obedience
A Warning: Avoid performative or combative Christianity
Question: Have you in any way been disrespectful or contentious in defending your Christian convictions, and if so, how can you make it right?
4. Faithful exiles…glorify God & make him known
Daniel consistently:
Points kings to God, which ends in God being glorified (e.g., 4:25, 27, 34-37)
Gives God credit (e.g., 6:21-22)
Our Goal:
Interpret life through what God has done
Use opportunities to speak of Him
Question: Who in your life could you naturally share the Lord with?
CHRIST & CONCLUSION
